Lion’s mane mushrooms (Hericium erinaceus) are made up of numerous long, white, fleshy spines that grow in a shaggy, pom-pom-like shape on dead hardwood trees like oak.

They can be eaten raw, dried or cooked and taken in capsule form. They are rich in thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, and minerals like manganese, zinc, and potassium.

They have been used in Chinese and East Asian medicine for 2000 years.

The active ingredients in Lion’s Mane are found in the fruiting body of the mushroom. This provides the beta-glucans which are specific for the beneficial effects of Lion’s Mane.

The active ingredients in Lion’s Mane include polysaccharides (the beta-glucans specific to mushrooms), erinacines hericerins, steroids, alkaloids and lactones. These ingredients all assist in helping protect the body from damage caused by free radicals and inflammation while promoting the growth and regeneration of nerve cells.

Origins of the supplement

Beta-glucans are polysaccharides. Polysaccharides, produced by a variety of natural plants such as oat, barley, make up the cell walls of fungi. There are different types of polysaccharides the most common the alpha and beta glucans. It is the very specific beta-glucans; Beta-d-glucans, from the fruiting section of medicinal mushrooms which produces the listed health benefits. The other glucans and polysaccharides can be derived from the mushroom roots and the growing grain mediums like oats, barley, starch – have mainly alpha-glucans. The high levels of polysaccharide do not give an indication of the concentration of the beta-glucans – the active polysaccharide.

    • Protection may occur by inhibiting the growth of H. pylori and protecting the stomach lining from damage.
  • Reducing inflammation – chronic inflammation and oxidative stress are believed to be the root causes of many modern illnesses
    • Lion’s Mane has a high antioxidant activity which assists in controlling inflammation.
  • Boosts the immune system.
  • Protection against heart disease and other cardiovascular risk factors.
    • It improves fat metabolism and lowers triglycerides.
    • Reduces blood oxidation and assists in reducing blood clotting.
