Description
Everyone wants strong, healthy bones and teeth and the usual response is to increase calcium intake. Vitamin D has also been suggested to increase the absorption of calcium. But it has been found that increasing the absorption of calcium does not necessarily mean that it is going to the bones and the teeth. Instead, it contributes to deposits of calcium in arteries and other soft tissue. This is where the interplay of Vitamin K2 with Vitamin D3 comes. Vitamin D3 helps your body absorb more calcium but vitamin K2 helps your body transport it to your bones and teeth.
The migration of calcification into the vascular tissue can result in a double burden of atherosclerosis and osteoporosis. It promotes hypercalcemia in general with dangers of myocardial infarction and the risk of urinary tract stones.
Supplementing with Vitamin K2 while taking Vitamin D3 is not going to reverse the damage already done to soft tissue through calcification but it will ensure that no further deposits occur.
Which is better, Vitamin K2 MK-4 or MK-7?
Supplements containing vitamin K2 often come in two forms: Vitamin K2 MK-4 and MK-7. MK-4 supplements are synthetic and have a shorter half-life, while MK-7 (trans), which is derived from natto, is natural and remains active in the body longer. One small study compared the bioavailability of MK4 and MK7 and concluded that MK7 is more bioavailable
These forms of Vitamin K are fat soluble, and it is recommended to consume them with meals since some fat should be present. It is best taken in conjunction with Vitamin D3.
Side Effects:
Research shows that Vitamin K2 does not cause excessive blood clotting but if you suffer from high blood pressure or have naturally high blood plasma volume levels, vitamin K-2 supplementation may increase your risk of developing hypertension and cardiovascular disease due to an over-thickening of your blood. Discuss this issue with your health practitioner.
