Description
Vitamin B12 (also known as cyanocobalamin) should be plentiful in most of our diets but the bodyβs ability to utilize it is often impaired, especially as we age.
20% of elderly people are thought to be deficient in Vitamin B12 even if many of them have no overt symptoms. Supplements are therefore often recommended with advancing age. Pernicious anaemia, affecting older adults in particular, can be a fatal unless cured by Vitamin B12. Vitamin B12 is the only B vitamin that the body stores in large amounts, mostly in the liver. It is usually taken in conjunction with folic acid. Vitamin B12 is essential for cell replication and is particularly important for red blood cell production. It helps maintain the protective sheath around nerves (myelin), assists in converting food to energy and plays a critical role in the production DNA and RNA, the genetic material in cells.
